A cyclist was killed in a traffic accident on the Driepaal Road in Dilsen-Stokkem on Thursday evening.
The cyclist was riding along the former track of a coal railway that is part of the Limburg cycle route network and crosses the Driepaal Road.
When he tried to ride across the street, he collided with a four-wheel-drive vehicle and suffered a severe headwound. Efforts by the emergency services to assist the 53-year-old cyclist, who hailed from Dilsen-Stokkem, were to no avail. He died at the scene of the accident.
Local police from the Maasland zone did the necessary reporting and informed the Limburg public prosecutor's office, which sent a traffic expert to the scene to investigate the circumstances of the fatal collision.
Police closed the Driepaal in both directions for a while, but later reopened it.
