A warning has been issued by Belgium's Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) in light of thunderstorms across Belgium which could become very intense on a local level.

Following weeks of sunny and dry weather, which will continue for one last day on Monday as the mercury rises to 31°C in many places, the skies are expected to finally open over the country by the evening. The RMI expects heavy thunderstorms and has issued a code yellow in place from later this afternoon (5 September) until the early hours of the morning in all provinces.

"During the afternoon and evening, the risk of thunderstorms increases. These showers may be locally intense and accompanied by hail and wind gusts," a statement on its website read.

"We expect rainfall amounts that may reach 20mm in 1 hour. The showers will leave Belgium in the second part of the night via the north."

Moderate thunderstorm warnings are also in place in large parts of France, according to MeteoAlarm's website.

Autumnal weather on the way?

Tuesday and Wednesday will both start out dry with clear skies, but by the afternoon, clouds will once again shift over large parts of Belgium, carrying with it another thunderstorm zone by the evening and at night. The maximum temperatures will be between 22°C and 27°C and between 21°C and 26°C on Wednesday.

"From Thursday onwards, we will enter an autumnal weather type with a low-pressure area moving towards the North Sea," the RMI stated. The weather will be cloudy with occasional showers and a fairly strong wind from the southwest, while a few thundery showers are possible.
