Sint-Genesius-Rode, Overijse and Tervuren, on the outskirts of Brussels, have signed a joint vision on Thursday to build more housing in the village centres, in a bid to reduce clustered housing.
The three municipalities have drawn up a note in the aim of building homes on suitable land, that is easily accessible and close to local facilities and services.
While the exact boundaries of the building are yet to be determined, but the main aim of the project is for housing to be less spread out among the municipalities.
Katrien Putzeys, head of the spatial planning department at the province of Flemish Brabant, stated to Belga News Agency that "it is important that the cores become denser and that there is less scattered building," adding that "these measures are necessary if we want to accommodate population growth while preserving the landscape character of the region and slowing down climate change."

A total of three information events are also being organised for residents of the municipalities, the first having occurred on Wednesday in Tervuren and was attended by some forty to fifty people.
"People's reactions were generally positive," Putzeys said, "but there were still a lot of questions about what concrete consequences the project will have."
Furthermore, some other municipalities in the Flemish Brabant as well as the Provincial Government as whole are also working on similar projects.
