The Flemish municipality of Dilbeek, on the outskirts of Brussels, is planning on awarding the title of honorary citizen to Belgium's star cyclist Remco Evenepoel, after his victory in this year's Vuelta a España on Sunday.
As the 22-year-old cyclist is from the Dilbeek neighbourhood of Schepdaal, Dilbeek's mayor Willy Segers has announced their intention to name him an honorary citizen as he fulfils of all the title's requirements.
"Remco has put in an exceptional and historic performance to put Dilbeek and especially Schepdaal on the map," Segers explained.

To that end, the nomination will be discussed by governing majority on Monday, before being voted on by the Municipal Council by the end of September.

Evenepoel is already a well-known figure in the area and his face adorns a local cafe in honour of his 2018 junior World Championship title. Still a young rider, Remco has shown he can compete at the highest level of elite cycling. Credit: Google Maps.
