The socialist and liberal trade unions submitted a strike notice to the supermarket group Delhaize on Monday evening after failed social consultations, De Tijd reports.

In 2019, Delhaize was reorganised to make the stores work more efficiently. This included multi-purpose teams with staff that could be deployed more flexibly. In addition, a "flying team" that was not fixed to an individual site was created to compensate for absences in stores.

But the Christian and liberal trade unions were not satisfied with the restructure and held back from signing the collective agreement. The socialist BBTK initially did but withdrew its support in spring.

A reconciliation meeting took place on Monday but it came to nothing. The unions and the management failed to agree on the existing collective labour agreement and an alternative proposal from the liberal association ACLVB was also rejected. The BBTK and the ACLVB therefore submitted a two-week strike notice.

If no solution is found during that period, a strike is expected to follow.
