De Lijn is giving away 100,000 digital tickets on the occasion of Mobility Week (16-22 September). A 'park-and-ride' option will also be offered with a free tram and bus to the city centre for those who park their car in Leuven, Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt.
The public transport operator for Flanders hopes that the offer will allow people to experience the convenience of trams and buses. Requesting and using a free ticket can be done via the app or De Lijn's website. After registering, travellers can claim the ticket and activate it via their personal account.
"I hope that in this way we will encourage people to leave the car at home and try out public transport," said Flemish Minister for Mobility and Public Works Lydia Peeters.

A maximum of four free tickets can be requested per person while tickets are still available. They can only save and use one ticket for free in the virtual wallet. Only when that ticket is used can they claim another one.
For the park-and-ride campaign, people who leave their car at one of the park-and-ride car parks in the four cities can take public transport to the city centre for free. To do so, travellers must text a unique code, found at participating car parks, to 4884. A €0.15 operator fee will be added.
"Together with its passengers, De Lijn can make a concrete and significant contribution to climate challenges," stated Ann Schoubs, director general of De Lijn. "Choosing public transport is a positive choice. It means we emit less CO2 and there are fewer traffic jams."
A bus replaces up to 30 cars, according to the public transport company.
