As part of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, the Walloon government has allocated €26.64 million to digitise road traffic by installing intelligent traffic lights.
By June 2026, some 400 traffic lights will be renovated and a new centralised management system will be installed. Smart traffic lights will give priority at intersections to public transport and favour pedestrians and cyclists.
The project is part of the region’s greater efforts to improve the efficiency and appeal of its public transport system. Other investments will fund dedicated bus lanes or roads, Walloon Minister for Mobility Phillipe Henry said in a press release.

Despite the focus on public transport, a central management station to digitise and synchronise traffic should benefit all road users; the new PEREX 4.0 centre, near Namur. Lights will now change on timings depending on traffic conditions and will generate fewer stops for motorists and therefore less pollution.
Currently, the regional administration manages a total of 700 traffic lights, 600 of which require modernising. A third of these lights are managed by Walloon Infrastructure Financing Company SOFICO, who will receive a €9.88 million subsidiary to carry out works for the traffic lights it operates.
