Campaign to be launched against risk of burglaries through wi-fi hacking

FPS Interior, the public service in charge of home affairs, will run a week-long campaign from October 17 to 23 to increase awareness about the risks of burglaries which may occur as a result of wifi-connected appliances.

As our daily lives have become increasingly digitalised, many household appliances are now connected to the internet, with Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden stating that "this provides several benefits and make our life simpler."

They do, however, also "pose risks as robbers can use unprotected networks to gain entry to a residence," Verlinden added.

KU Leuven's Computer Security and Industrial Cryptography (COSIC) department has examined 16 connectable devices, with 54 security flaws having been flagged up.

As a result, the Directorate-General for Security and Prevention of the FPS Interior will launch a campaign from Monday 17 October until 23 October, which will include various tips on how to secure your appliances' wifi connections.
