Dutch-language students in Brussels following higher education courses in the arts increased significantly during the past school year thanks to six new fields of study.
In the 2019-2020 school year, 598 students were enrolled in arts education. That number rose to 630 the next school year and now no fewer than 711 students attend art education in Brussels.
The growing number can be attributed to the six new fields of study; courses that ran already did not see any notable fluctuations in student numbers. Music is the most popular subject, followed by audiovisual education and drama.
Mainly female from outside Brussels
Arts higher education is predominantly female. In the 2021-2022 school year, two-thirds of students were female and the proportion of women has been increasing in recent years. Moreover, seven in ten students do not live in the Brussels region.
"It is striking that on the one hand we attract mainly female students, and on the other we count relatively few Brussels residents among the students. If we can point out one area of improvement, I think we should mainly think about how we can give our own children opportunities in art education," states Bianca Debaets, a Brussels MP.
