The CGSP Cheminots Liège-Verviers-Huy-Welkenraedt trade union representing railway workers has expressed their fears that 25 railway lines are under threat due to the underfunding of SNCB and Infrabel. As a result, they are calling on the Federal Government to increase their funding.
Having gone on a 24-hour strike in early October to demand better funding for railways, rail unions in Wallonia have now criticised the earmarked sums of €115 million for 2023 and €100 million for 2024, whereas, according to them, "€250 million is needed to maintain the network in 2023 and 2024."
As a result of this 'underfunding,' the union has expressed further fears that around 25 railway lines, representing 750 km, are under threat, especially in the provinces of Liège and Luxembourg.

Furthermore, the CGSP has stated that this may lead 20 to 25% reduction in railway employment due to non-replacement, with the running of trains already rendered difficult to a pre-existent understaffing issue.
