From summer 2023, new signs will line motorways in Flanders to show drivers which parking areas have charging points for electric vehicles. Flemish Mobility Minister Lydia Peeters made the announcement on Sunday in the weekly De Zondag.

In this way, electric car drivers will be able to see at a glance where they can recharge their batteries. The minister says she wants to alleviate the concerns of these drivers: “We are doing this by speeding up the deployment of recharging infrastructures and by indicating which parking areas are equipped”.

Belgium trails far behind neighbours the Netherlands and Luxembourg with its lower proportion of charging points – the Netherlands has almost eight times the number of charging points per 100 kilometres. At the same time, Belgium has one of the highest densities of vehicles in the EU and hopes that many of these vehicles will be electrified in the coming years.

To this end, Peeters announced earlier this year that Flanders would make major steps in rolling out charging facilities after mapping out the strategic locations. The scheme even allowed for those with electric vehicles to request charging points in their vicinity.
