On Wednesday, the Federal Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open VLD) and the Secretary of State for Digitalisation Mathieu Michel (MR) announced that Belgian citizens would now be able to obtain civil documents through the digital platform Just-on-web.
Previously, these documents were only accessible at the electronic counter of citizens' municipality of residence. However, as certain communes had not yet been digitised, the administrative procedure became 'unnecessarily tedious and inefficient,' according to Van Quickenborne's cabinet.
As a result, Belgians are now able to consult copies of their civil status records online via the Just-on-web platform. This concerns documents such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, prenatal recognition certificates, change of name or surname, adoption certificates or sex change certificates.

While not all documents have been entered into the database, there are presently 9.8 million old documents available, with the option of submitting a request via the platform to have a document that is not in the database electronically added. When the copy or extract of the document becomes accessible, the citizen will be notified through e-mail or the eBox.
