Flemish public transport company De Lijn has complained of an increase in attacks against its staff and vehicles on New Year’s Eve, with several of its drivers and vehicles coming under fire from fireworks in the provinces of Antwerp and East Flanders.
Buses, trams, and several shelters at bus stops were damaged by fireworks. In another incident, the window of a tram was broken after stones were thrown at it, De Lijn said on Sunday.
In other Flemish provinces, New Year’s Eve was calmer. In Genk and Limburg, bus shelters were damaged by New Year’s revellers.
De Lijn is facing a serious shortage of drivers due to poor working conditions. One in six De Lijn drivers quit after just the first few months and attacks against De Lijn employees remain commonplace.
