Belgians' electricity consumption decreased by 3.3% last year compared to 2021, Belga News Agency has reported.
Belgian residents consumed a total of 81.7 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity in 2022, down from 84.5 TWh in 2021, according to figures released on Friday by Elia, a Brussels-based electricity operator.
Although the average decline in consumption fell a modest 2% from January to September, Elia noted that Belgians' electricity use decreased significantly (8%) over October, November, and December compared to the average rate of consumption over the previous five years. The largest reduction in electricity use was recorded in November (11.1%).

Elia further noted that soaring energy costs, coupled with unseasonably warm weather, were likely the major factors behind the decrease in consumption.
Although significant, Belgians' decrease in electricity use ultimately fell short of the European Commission's reduction target of 10% across all Member States.
