Visiting the friterie (chip shop) is a cornerstone of Belgian culture. However, ordering fries to take away leads to a lot of waste, with mountains of paper and cartons being thrown in the trash every day. To combat this, municipalities in the province of Liège are encouraging customers to bring their own bowls to their local friterie.
Citizens in the municipalities of Heron, Wanze, Burdinne and Braives can take their bowls and help to reduce waste – and get a few more fries for doing so – during a month-long test phase organised by the Local Development Agencies and the Up'Citoyen project.
The businesses involved are also expected to gain financially from the project as they will not have to provide any of the paper and boxes they usually do.

The hope is that the practice of bringing your own bowl, which was the norm for all Belgians half a century ago, will continue beyond the test phase.
