Striking police unions have set up roadblocks on traffic leading to Charleroi Airport on Thursday morning, Belga News Agency reports. Several flights have already been delayed but there have not yet been any cancellations, the airport confirmed.
Airport management stated that the protest action had disrupted access to their terminals and was asking passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours in advance.
Thursday's action is part of a month of protests by police unions, having already demonstrated at the Eurostar terminal in Brussels-Midi as well as in front of the Tihange nuclear power plant.
These unions stated that three demands have to be met if authorities want their protests to stop. These include employee pay rises, improved pension plans as well as more investment in local and federal police forces.
Eddie Quaino, a CGSP union representative, told Belga News Agency that their demands would improve the attractiveness of their profession, which is currently facing mass staff shortages. However, "our demands have not yet been met," he lamented.
