Despite the price of chocolate rising 12.2% over the past year, the consumption of Belgium’s favourite edible product is still high as has been shown by sales figures released by various chocolate companies.
Belgium's statistics office Statbel confirmed that the price of chocolate and derived products had indeed risen by 12.2% between March 2021 and March 2022, with the consumer price index for cocoa and chocolate-based powder in Belgium rising from 100 in 2013 to 130 in 2023.
But Belgians continue to buy and consume chocolate in large quantities, especially during the Easter period. Galler, for example, sold 230 tonnes of their little eggs at Easter, which accounts for 13% of their total annual production. Similarly, the Pierre Marcolini chocolate factory makes 16-18% of its annual sales in a few weeks at this time.
