Telecommunication Minister Petra De Sutter has released €11 million to improve Internet connections on trains running between small towns and communes, she told a House committee on Wednesday in response to a question from Melissa Depraetere (Vooruit).
Telecoms operators are already obliged to provide mobile Internet on the fifteen busiest routes, which run mainly between large towns. The deadline for making these investments is September 2024.
There is no such obligation for less important routes. However, the minister does not want these lines to be neglected.
The €11 million budget will allow operators to install 5G antennas. They will be able to submit applications for subsidies in the coming weeks.
Implementation of the project is planned for 2024-2025.
