The construction of a memorial garden in place of convicted child abuser, rapist and murderer Marc Dutroux’s house in Marcinelle (Charleroi) ended this week.
Begun last June, the garden erased from the landscape a building associated with the ordeal that Julie and Mélissa, two of Dutroux's child victims, went through over 25 years ago.
In place of Dutroux’s house, located in rue de Philippeville in Marcinelle, there is now a hanging garden, called 'Between Earth and Sky.' Made of white bricks, the new space is overhung by a fresco representing a child and his kite.
The parents of the two girls were involved in the project. Before the start of the construction, they met with the local authorities. This allowed them to express a request: to keep the cellars - where Julie and Melissa had been imprisoned by Dutroux until their death - in case additional investigations might be necessary.
In recent weeks, the house that Marc Dutroux held in Sars-la-Buissière (Lobbes) was also demolished. For the time being, there are no definite plans for the place.
