Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has promised Ukraine support in the war against Russia “as long as necessary and beyond”. The Italian met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome on Saturday, whom she referred to as “her friend”.
Kyiv must be placed in a strong position for negotiations with Russia “because peace cannot follow capitulation, that would be a dangerous peace for Europe”, Meloni said.
Zelenski in turn thanked Italy for its support. The Ukrainian President said he was moved by the many Ukrainian flags on the streets of Rome.
Meloni further stressed that she supports Ukraine’s desire to join the European Union. Kyiv is fighting not only for itself but “for all of us”, the Italian prime minister echoed.
