A Dutch tourist is in a life-threatening condition after being struck with fragments of a pétanque ball in the Walloon municipality of Stavelot in the Ardennes, Sudinfo reports.
On Saturday evening, a group of Dutch tourists staying at a country chalet (gîte) decided, for whatever reason, to place pétanque balls in the brazier, a type of barbeque pit.
Unsurprisingly, the pétanque balls, which are typically made of steel, exploded.
“It had a grenade effect,” the Stavelot-Malmedy police zone told Sudinfo. “As it exploded, someone got pieces in the back of their skull. His life is in danger.”
An ambulance rushed to the scene of the accident at an address on the shore of the Warche River at around 21:30. The man is currently hospitalised, in critical condition.
