"It may not be Niagara Falls, but southern Belgium has some splendid waterfalls to discover on a hike," asserts Belgian magazine Moustique when sharing a shortlist of the best waterfalls in Wallonia.
Indeed, not many expect the presence of cascades in a Lowland country. Yet Wallonia's nature hides many wonders, so is anyone actually surprised?
Calling all hikers, lovers of the Ardennes and travel explorers alike, here are six of the best waterfalls in Wallonia.
Chanxhe Waterfalls
In Sprimont, near Liège, the Croix Verte path winds through the countryside until it reaches the Chanxhe Waterfalls. While they are not natural (they were created in an old quarry), the place is well-worth a visit.
The complete walk, which follows the Ourthe river from its beginning, is about ten kilometres long, but the route can be shortened to admire the waterfalls directly.
Coo Waterfall
A few kilometres from Stavelot, the Amblève river flows from a height of 15 metres – creating the most famous natural waterfall in Belgium.
Given its size, as well as the presence of the Plopsa Coo theme park and the Coo-Adventure sports park, the area attracts many tourists. Even for those who prefer peace, quiet and being in the middle of nature, it is worth seeing at least once.
Waterfall of the Nutons
Probably not the most impressive waterfall of the list, but one it is one of the most idyllic and tranquil trails. The name translates as the waterfall of the trolls, and it can be found in the Statte River Valley.
A pleasant walk in the woods on a 9-kilometre long path, the hike starts below the charming village of Solwaster, near Jalhay (province of Liege).
Bayehon waterfall
This 9-metre high waterfall is nestled at an altitude of 510 metres in the Hautes Fagnes, near the village of Longfaye (Malmedy). The waterfall ends its course in a large basin, bordered by reddish rocks.
The nature reserve of the Fagne du Setay, where the waterfall is located, has several hikes to discover.
Reinhardstein waterfall
A fine snake of water 60 metres high, the Reinhardstein waterfall (Waimes, province of Liège), at the foot of the castle of the same name, is the tallest waterfall in Wallonia.
Although the path is not the most accessible (some bridges are barely secured, so be careful), the walk has a massive advantage: the magnificent Reinhardstein Castle overlooking the waterfall.
Waterfall of the Chaudière
The waterfall appears in a small tributary of the Amblève – in the commune of Aywaille, province of Liège.
Accessible for the whole family, the walk along the Ninglinspo is one of the most beautiful in the Belgian Ardennes.
