Engie launched a new type of contract on Thursday aimed at customers who drive an electric vehicle. If the customer charges their car during off-peak hours, they will receive a bonus.
This new plan, called Engie Drive, is aimed at people who regularly recharge their electric vehicles at home. The new plan will be powered by a mobile application. For each smart charging session scheduled with the app, customers will receive a bonus of €1.5 per kilowatt.
According to the energy supplier, Engie is the first company to encourage its customers to charge their vehicles during off-peak hours. Other suppliers, however, offer special contracts for those who drive electric vehicles.
The company is certainly keen for its clients to charge their electric vehicles, which require large amounts of energy during non-peak hours. During these times, such as during the evening or on the weekend, supply is plentiful and demand is low.
“By encouraging customers to recharge during off-peak hours, Engie is helping to maintain a balance on the network. The advantage that we derive from it is shared with the customer via this bonus,” a company spokesperson said.

In the event of a surge in demand of the network, high voltage network managers are forced to intervene, costing suppliers money. It is therefore important that energy companies balance their portfolio.
Engie’s new offer is not yet compatible with all models of electric vehicles. In order to benefit from the new plan, manufacturers must authorise the connection of Engie’s app to the vehicle. Over time, more brands should have access to it, the company assures.
