Some 3,020 offences were recorded by police on 24-25 May, during a nationwide campaign against distracted driving, the Federal Police announced on Thursday.
A total of 2,681 offences committed during the third edition of the National Campaign against all Forms of Distracted Driving were related to the use of mobile phones at the wheel.
The remaining 339 concerned other forms of distraction such as reading the newspaper, using make-up or even shaving at the wheel.
Over the two days of checks, 462 driving licences were immediately withdrawn, local police said.
The number of offences recorded was higher than on previous editions, organised in May and November 2022.
“These results show that many drivers are still unaware of the danger of using mobile phones and other forms of distraction at the wheel and/or that the urge to use mobile phones even in the car remains very strong,” the Federal Police noted.
The law enforcers highlighted the need for preventive and repressive action in this regard.
