A 22-year-old man was sentenced on Thursday by the Huy Correctional Court to 10 years in prison for stabbing his partner, who was 8 1/2 months pregnant at the time, the defendant’s lawyer said on Thursday. The foetus did not survive.
The incident took place on the night of 16 August 2021 at the home of the defendant’s partner. After taking part in festivities at the Place de Huy, the accused was involved in a violent argument with his partner. Under the influence of alcohol and narcotics, the defendant dealt her several blows.
The young woman, aged 20, was stabbed repeatedly, including once in the stomach, causing the death of her baby, whose birth was imminent.
The defendant was not prosecuted for causing the death of the foetus, but for the attempted murder of his partner. The prosecution asked for a 14-year prison sentence; the court sentenced him to 10.
