While the heat is often synonymous with holidays and relaxation, it can also prove to be an inconvenience in many sectors, including construction.

In order to minimise the impact of hot weather on employees, 84% of construction companies are bringing forward their working hours. Embuild, the construction federation, announced the changes officially in a press release on Wednesday.

In its “heat plan”, Embuild provides for a range of organisational and technical measures designed to allow the sector to be as effective as possible despite rising working conditions. For example, it recommends rotating outdoor tasks, providing sufficient breaks and supplying drinks and sun cream.

In addition to shifting the start of the day to avoid the heat, the construction federation also recommends manufacturing certain building components in workshops or factories rather than on site.

Another consideration is that the rise in temperatures can have an impact on the quality of certain products. To reduce the risk of incidents and accidents in the workplace, Embuild therefore advises against the use of materials that dry quickly, such as mortar, concrete and paint, as well as glue, whose adhesive power is altered.
