The idea of creating a national park in Walloon Brabant, which was proposed at the end of 2021, is still alive despite the Walloon government taking no action to pursue it over past 18 months.

Cooperation between the regions and provinces continues with the aim to connect the ecological network of Brabant forests, including the forest at Meerdael, the Bois de Halle and the Sonian Forest, to create the proposed reserve.

These areas have become fragmented through urbanisation, and the goal of the proponents is to create ecological bridges – ecoducts - which will cross regional or communal roads, linking the forests and allowing wildlife to move between them safely.

In total, 14 municipalities are involved in promoting this project to densify the ecological links of the Walloon Brabant province, which itself is a great supporter of seeing a national park extend over its territory.
