The Brussels fire brigade responded to a violent fire in a house on Rue Aviateur in Etterbeek at around 05:00 on Saturday.

They discovered a young woman unconscious on the second floor of the building, where two student flats had been set up. Rescuers attempt to resuscitate the victim, but to no avail. The causality, a European student aged just under 30, died.

“When the fire brigade arrived on the scene, the ground floor of the house was completely engulfed in flames”, explained Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade. “Additional firefighters and medical staff were immediately dispatched to the scene. With the invaluable help of the Montgomery police zone, the people present in the house were evacuated and a security and exclusion perimeter was set up”, he related.

“During the search and rescue, an unconscious person was found on the second floor. Resuscitation was started immediately, but was unfortunately unsuccessful. The person died on the spot,” said the spokesman.

“The house consisted of a dwelling and two kots (student accommodation). Tragically, it was a foreign European student (Editor's note: The victim was later identified as an employee of the Federation of Organic Farmers) who lost her life. She was studying in Belgium as part of an exchange programme. The authorities will do everything necessary to notify the family of the deceased as soon as possible.”
