A 59-year-old Belgian man was found dead in the Central American country of Guatemala after drowning on Thursday, Het Laatste Nieuws reports. The man had spent several years living in the country.
The man was reportedly last witnessed by his neighbours bathing at Lake Atitlán in the Sierra Madre mountain range. The lake is a popular destination for tourists but has a dangerous reputation for swimming. Atitlán is around 300 metres deep.
The lifeless body of the 59-year-old Belgian was spotted by passers-by, who alerted the emergency services.
Belgian authorities are now making arrangements for the body of the man to be repatriated back to Belgium.
