Belgium at risk of heatwave as mercury climbs

Weather across Belgium will continue to be warm today. In Brussels, temperatures will peak at 31 degrees. With high temperatures set to continue, with some now fearing for an early heatwave.

Saturday evening saw slightly milder temperatures sweep the country. In the High Fens, temperatures fell to 16 degrees in the Ardennes and to around 21 degrees in big cities. Temperatures were helped by a light easterly wind.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (IRM) warns that warm continental temperatures are here to stay. Temperatures will exceed 25 degrees across the plains until at least the end of next week.

Today, stormy weather in northern France will push hot air into Belgium, pushing the mercury even higher to 32 degrees in some parts.

The IRM is now warning of a potential heatwave, as there will soon be at least five consecutive days with temperatures above 25 and three days with maximum temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

The IRM has also issued a yellow warning, advising Belgians to be vigilant during the high temperatures.
