Port workers made a shocking discovery in Antwerp last Monday, Het Laatste Nieuws reports. Instead of drugs, they found a stowaway long-tailed boa constrictor which had somehow found its way onto the ship in South America.

Unfortunately for the serpentine stowaway, the snake had not gone unscathed. While cargo was being emptied, a large pallet fell on its head.

The snake was brought to a wildlife rescue centre in the municipality of Kapellen in the Antwerp province, where it was diagnosed with a fracture in its eye socket.

The snake was also wounded on the back of its abdomen, which is believed to be from a burst abscess.

The animal was transferred to the SOS Reptile centre in Ichtegem, West Flanders, on Wednesday for further care.
