A Belgian man was murdered and then set on fire whilst on holiday at a Turkish holiday resort, Het Laatste Nieuws reports.

The corpse of the 32-year-old, as yet identified only as 'H.M.', was discovered on Friday afternoon in the forests near the seaside town of Marmaris, along the Turkish Riviera in southwestern Turkey.

He is believed to have been strangled with a backpack strap before his body was burned. The flames subsequently caused the destruction of approximately five hectares (or 50,000 square metres) of nearby forest.

Eight helicopters, five firefighting aircraft, and 400 emergency workers took roughly three hours to put out the flames.

The Turkish authorities later arrested a man with an extensive criminal record on suspicion of murder. Known only as 'M.A.', he has previously been convicted of sexual abuse and armed robbery. He has since been released without charge due to a lack of evidence of his involvement in this case.

Turkish media have also reported that members of the victim's family have travelled to Turkey in order to provide DNA material to confirm the identity of the victim.
