A major fire broke out in a school in the Abbaye de Flône, near the Walloon city of Liège, on Wednesday. Around 1,500 students were evacuated.
Firefighters were called to the scene of the fire on Wednesday shortly before 08:30, at the Institute of Christian Education at the abbey. A fire broke out in the commissary, for an unknown reason.
RTL reports that around 1,500 kindergarten and primary school students and their teachers were evacuated. Some of the children were sitting an exam when the fire broke out.
An emergency plan was activated and reinforcements were called from the Liège and Andenne rescue zones to battle the blaze. The national road near the scene of the fire and shipping traffic on the Meuse were closed to traffic to allow the evacuation of the pupils and teachers, who travelled on foot to the local town hall.
