The federal government service for Home Affairs has activated the special number 1722, on Tuesday, based on a warning for heavy thunderstorms by the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (KMI).
Heavy storms will occur across Belgium, towards the end of the afternoon. Rain showers, heavy gusts of wind, and hail can cause damage in some places. In Brussels, thunderstorms are expected as well.
People can call 1722 when they need the fire service, but there is nobody in danger. The number is intended to keep citizens away from the emergency numbers 112 (fire service and ambulance) and 101 (police), when there is no life-threatening or potentially life-threatening situation.
