Carnival Cruise Line produced 10 times more emissions in 2017 than all of Europe's cars combined, according to recently released figures from the sustainable transport organization 'Transport and Environment'.
Cruise ships emit sulphur oxide, which, according to New Mobility, harms the human respiratory system and acidifies environments on land and in water.
Spain, Italy and Greece had the most polluted ports, with Barcelona topping the list. Ports in these countries are large tourist destinations, but they also have lax sulphur oxide standards.
86 cruise ships emitted 28 tonnes of sulphur oxide in Belgium in 2017. The port of Zeebrugge was the only Belgian port to make the top fifty most polluted ports in Europe. It ranked 27th with 7 tonnes of sulphur oxide.
