The Brussels native Toumani Camara is guaranteed to play in the NBA next season after signing a four-season contract with the Phoenix Suns, the franchise announced on Monday.

After being selected in the second round of the draft by the Phoenix Suns, 23-year-old Camara was not assured of signing a contract with the Arizona-based franchise, who were also the NBA finalists in 2021.

Yet on Monday, the winger signed a four-season contract, which is only guaranteed for the 2023-2024 season. The other three seasons are under option.

On June 22, Camara became the second-ever Belgian to be drafted into the NBA after Axel Hervelle in 2005, but the Liégeois Hervelle never made the leap up to top league.

The Brussels native Camara will therefore become the second Belgian to play in the NBA after DJ Mbenga, a two-time champion with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010, however he did not join them through the draft system –  the annual event which sees players, mainly coming from US colleges, being signed up by NBA teams.
