After a brighter start to the day, fierce storms and heavy rainfall will pass over the northwest of Belgium on Tuesday night.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) issued a code yellow warning for heavy rain associated with a high trough that will pass through Belgium from France, alongside an active rainstorm from Tuesday night at 23:00 until Wednesday morning at 09:00.

"During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, fierce rain and thunderstorms will occur, with a precipitation total of 20 l/m2 in six hours in the provinces of West and East Flanders and Antwerp," the RMI said. The code is not issued for Namur and Luxembourg.

Tweet translation: "Warning for rain from 04/07 23h to 05/07 09h: During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, an active rain zone associated with a high trough will pass through our country from France."

Thunderstorms are also likely in other regions. These will bring strong westerly winds at the coast with gusts of 70 to 80 km/h, even a little more during heavy showers.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also activated the emergency number 1722.

For storm and water damage requiring assistance from the fire brigade, citizens can ask for help via the e-counter www.1722.be or call 1722. When making a digital request via 1722, the request lands directly with the fire service.

The purpose of the 1722 e-counter and number 1722 is to avoid overloading the 112 emergency centres and not keep people in mortal danger waiting. As always, people are advised only to call the emergency number 112 for situations that are potentially life-threatening.
