A Parliamentary committee wants the State of Belgium to haul Hungary before the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for its treatment of LGBTQI people.
The House’s External Relations Committee on Wednesday adopted a motion for a resolution calling on Belgium to take the initiative of bringing a case before the two jurisdictions to denounce Hungary’s liberticidal and discriminatory measures against LGBTQI people.
The text was adopted unanimously, with the abstention of Vlaams Belang.
“We are convinced of the need to consider further sanctions against a government that cultivates hatred, a government that scorns individual freedoms, a government that stigmatises the fact that you can love whoever you want,” said MP Christophe Lacroix (PS), author of the text.
“We welcome the European Commission’s decision of 15 July 2021 to initiate infringement proceedings before the European Court against Hungary in respect of the law of 15 June 2021 banning homosexuality,” Lacroix added.
“But if, for one reason or another, this procedure should not succeed, Belgium could, however, alone or allied with Member States, prepare to refer the matter directly to the Court of Justice of the EU,” he noted.
