The much-discussed films ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ are both doing very well in Belgium. According to cinema chain Kinepolis, it has already sold 68,000 tickets for the former since 19 July.
Meanwhile, some 48,000 people came to watch Oppenheimer. "Those figures are even better than we had hoped," the cinema chain announced.
Both films were released on the same day in Belgian cinemas. ‘Barbie’ is about the famous toy doll whilst ‘Oppenheimer’ deals with the creator of the atomic bomb.
“We knew these films would do very well but these figures are even better than we had hoped,” Kinepolis said. “Presumably, ‘Barbie’ is going in the same direction as ‘Super Mario Bros’. That film has been playing in our theatres since April and is still attracting a lot of people.”

Summer is an important period for Kinepolis. Apart from the two most recent blockbusters, films like ‘Indiana Jones’, ‘Mission Impossible’ and ‘Elemental’ are also doing very well at the moment.
In the US and Canada, ‘Barbie’ grossed $155 million during its first weekend in theatres, instantly becoming the biggest opening success this year. Major rival ‘Oppenheimer’ brought in $80.5 million, says Universal Pictures. Together, they could generate the most revenue for the cinema sector since the Covid-19 pandemic.
