The son of a victim whose body parts were found floating in the Albert Canal on Tuesday has been arrested in connection with the death of his mother, Sudinfo reports.
As previously reported, the arms and legs of a woman were discovered in a fridge found floating on the Albert Canal near Hermalle-sous-Argenteau (Oupeye). The body parts were found by a passer-by, who brought the fridge onto land.
A forensic laboratory concluded that the limbs belonged to the same person. An investigation was opened by the Liège Federal Judicial Police (PJF).
According to new information from Sudinfo, the limbs reportedly belong to 74-year-old Maria Verdoolaege. On Thursday evening, police arrested the victim’s son, Ishmael, at a hotel in Zaventem where he was preparing to fly to South Korea. The suspect will be brought before a judge today.

On 15 July, police reportedly received an anonymous call saying that an individual had killed his mother in the town of Jemeppe-sur-Meuse, in the province of Liège. The report said that he had cut the body up and put it in a freezer.

Police came to the address to conduct a search, but found nothing abnormal. Police suspected nothing until the fridge was found floating on the river on Wednesday.
It is now believed that Maria was murdered on 10 July, dismembered, placed into the fridge, and thrown into the canal. Police note that Ishmael had carefully cleaned the crime scene of any evidence of the killing.
