Prison terms of 2-3 years requested for trio accused of attempted murder by fire

The office of the public prosecutor in Liège called on Wednesday for prison terms of two to three years for three Liège residents charged with an attempted murder in Grâce-Hollogne.

The victim had been doused with petrol by the defendants, who had set fire to his vehicle.

The events took place on the night of 18 December 2022. The victim had been awakened by the noise caused by individuals vandalising his vehicle, which was parked outside his home. The criminals were dousing the vehicle with petrol when the man got out. To scare him off, one of the offenders threw petrol in his direction, then lit the fuel spilled on the car. The owner of the vehicle moved back, thus avoiding contact with the fire.

In court, the main defendant admitted to the offences, which he linked to a settling of scores.

The public prosecutor requested prison terms of three years for the main perpetrator and two years for his two accomplices.

On the defence side, the attorney for the main accused asked for community work or a suspended sentence, while the lawyer for a second defendant requested an acquittal.

The third defendant is being tried in absentia.

Judgement will be handed down on 14 August.
