Thibaut Courtois is suffering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will undergo surgery in the coming days, Real Madrid said on Thursday.

“Following tests carried out on our player Thibaut Courtois, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. The player will undergo surgery in the next few days,” Real wrote in a brief statement.

Courtois, 31, reportedly injured himself in training on Thursday and left the pitch in tears, according to reports from Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

Real Madrid has not said how long Courtois will be out of action, but he is expected to be sidelined for several months. Real Madrid are due to start their league campaign at Bilbao on Saturday at 21:30.

The Red Devils goalkeeper will therefore miss the remainder of the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in Germany with five matches still to play until November.

Last June, Courtois was at the heart of a controversy with the Red Devils when he left the squad ahead of the trip to Estonia. The goalkeeper was reportedly unhappy that he had not been captain for the visit of Austria a few days earlier.
