A man in his twenties has been detained and referred to the Liège public prosecutor’s office for posting a photo of a police officer on social media and claiming that the officer was the one that shot and killed a man in his 30s on Friday afternoon in Oupeye.
The young man turned himself in to the police, the justice department in Liège reported on Tuesday afternoon.
He had posted the comments 'Hide well,' with little emojis representing bombs and 're-spin the information,' accompanying a photo showing a 25-year-old policeman who was in no way connected to the events in Oupeye, Liège’s public prosecutor’s office reported.
The author of the post, who hails from the Liège region, gave himself up to the police on his own and admitted the facts. He explained that he had been told to relay this information on social networks, which he had done. Following this confession, he was detained and brought before the Liège public prosecutor’s office on Tuesday on charges of harassment.
He is expected to be indicted for harassment shortly, once the final checks have been carried out.
This is not the only police officer whose photo ended up on social networks in connection with this affair. Another policeman from the Basse-Meuse region, who was travelling in an unmarked car, was followed last weekend by several people, who believed he was the person who fired the shot that led to the death in Oupeye.
