With next June's European elections now open to young people aged 16 and over, Education Minister Caroline Désir (PS) is urging secondary schools in Wallonia and Brussels to encourage young people to vote.
"Schools have an undeniable role to play", said Désir, when questioned on this subject by several MPs in the French Community Government on Tuesday.
The French-speaking Minister announced that she will also shortly be sending a circular to schools to make them aware of the importance of young people taking part in the forthcoming European elections.
This circular will present the various tools already available to schools and the possible partnerships with various players active in the field of citizenship and democracy.
Désir reminded MPs that if political debates were organised in schools in the run-up to the vote, then it was important to ensure that all the democratic parties were represented.
Nearly 285,000 young Belgians are potentially affected by the lowering of the voting age to 16 in the next European elections. Last month, the Belgian Constitutional Court also ruled that they are not longer required to register to vote.
