Brussels Prime Minister Rudi Vervoort (PS) will appear before the region's Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee in mid-September to discuss insecurity in and around Brussels-Midi station.

The hearing is scheduled for 12 September at 9.30 a.m., it was announced on Monday.

About ten days ago, the CEO of railway utility SNCB, Sophie Dutordoir, had sent a letter asking for help from various stakeholders to improve cleanliness and security in and around the Brussels-Midi station, the country’s largest train station and the main point of entry for many foreign travellers.

In response, the federal government announced on Friday the adoption of a three-pronged action plan, coordinated by the National Crisis Centre. The very next day, the police carried out a vast control operation in and around the station, leading to the arrest of around sixty people.

The Greens, the PS and the opposition N-VA and VB had previously called for an extraordinary meeting of the Brussels Parliament’s Home Affairs Committee to discuss the issue. This will now take place on 12 September.
