Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has said that Belgium "stands by Morocco" as the North African country was hit on Friday night by a powerful earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and injured hundreds more.
"After the earthquake that caused many victims in Morocco, all our thoughts are with the victims and their families," De Croo said in a message published on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
"Belgium stands by Morocco's side at these difficult times," he added.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib also expressed her condolences, writing that "the ties that unite Belgium and Morocco are strengthened in times of difficulty".
Climate Minister Zakia Khattabi also reacted on X, expressing her "solidarity and deep compassion for the Moroccan people, particularly for the bereaved families".

Similarly, Walloon Minister-President Elio Di Rupo affirmed his "deep sympathy" for Morocco and sent, "on behalf of Wallonia, all my condolences and our solidarity to the Moroccan people".
Several party presidents also declared their support for Morocco, including Paul Magnette, the President of the PS, the Co-President of Ecolo, Rajae Maouane, the President of the MR, Georges-Louis Bouchez, the President of Les Engagés, Maxime Prévot, and the President of the PTB, Raoul Hedebouw.
