The Belgian Foreign Ministry has created an emergency hotline (+32 2 501 4000) for citizens affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on Friday night.
The earthquake has killed at least 632 people and injured hundreds more. It has also caused huge material damage and spread panic in Marrakech and other cities.
A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that 630 Belgians had reported their presence in the region to the Belgian authorities prior to the earthquake through the Ministry's "Travellers Online" website. The actual number of Belgians in the region is almost certainly higher.
The Foreign Ministry is also appealing to Belgians on the ground to stay safe and follow the instructions of the local authorities.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hadja Lahbib, has already contacted her Moroccan counterpart to offer Belgium's assistance.
