Foreign Affairs has not yet received any reports of Belgians being either injured or killed in the earthquake in Morocco on Friday evening, it said on Monday.
Over the weekend, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs contacted the 630 or so Belgians known to be in the region.
These were Belgians living in Morocco or who had registered on the Foreign Office’s Travellers Online website. None of them has so far reported any casualties. However, the actual number of Belgians in the region is thought to be higher than estimated.
In the meantime, Belgium has activated the B-Fast service to provide assistance as soon as Morocco requests it. This has not yet officially taken place, the Ministry confirmed on Monday.
The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, moreover, already received numerous calls to the emergency number (+32 2 501 4000) which can be contacted by relatives or close friends of Belgians who are in Morocco.
