A 39-year-old ambulance driver was arrested by police on Saturday afternoon during a traffic stop in Hasselt (Limburg province), Het Laatste Nieuws reports.
During the checks on Gouverneur Verwilghensingel, the man was found to be under the influence of drugs and without a valid driver's licence. The vehicle is owned by a private company that carries out private ambulance services on behalf of hospitals.
At the time of the arrest, the man was not transporting patients. However, earlier that day, the driver was found to have indeed transported somebody to hospital.
Local police have confirmed that the incident is under investigation. The driver was prosecuted and the owner of the private vehicle was notified of the incident.
