Three workers were injured after a van crashed into the Arts-Loi tunnel in Brussels at around 02:00 on Monday while it was closed for maintenance works, announced the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police area.

The vehicle, in which four people were travelling, crashed into an aerial platform in the tunnel where four people were working.

Three were injured, two slightly and one seriously who is now in intensive care.

The four occupants of the van were questioned and an investigation is now being carried out, according to the police.

The work underway during the night of Sunday to Monday in the Arts-Loi tunnel was taking place at the entrance to the tunnel.

Unconfirmed reports on social media have suggested the car was allegedly travelling at 100mph and the driver was under the influence.

The investigation will now have to determine the circumstances of the accident, including how fast the van was travelling and whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
